Prevent. Protect. Prosecute. Every number tells a sad story

Prevent: aim for zero abuse...early intervention and prevention are key.
Protect: it is everyone' business - see every child as your child.
Prosecute: abuse is criminal. Prosecution - not impunity - for offenders.
  • 54 225 crimes against children reported in 2010/2011.
  • About half of those cases were sexual offences: 28 128.
  • Around 30% of sex crimes against children involve victims under 10 years of age.
  • How your donation helps UNICEF to act for children
    Educate
We educate children and communities about abuse and what to do about it. Knowledge is in - secrecy and silence are out.
    Enforce
We work to hold abusers accountable: stronger law enforcement and conviction of offenders.
    Support
We put children first: support services must offer child victims immediate, appropriate care.
    Challenge
We challenge mind-sets and practices that tolerate or enable abuse - because change begins in minds and hearts.
Report violence against children and women
Acting against violence is everyone's business. Take a stand - report abuse. Important contact numbers and websites include:

    On UNICEF's status in SA:
UNICEF is the only United Nations agency devoted exclusively to the needs of children. Registered as an international organisation in South Africa, our work is aligned with national development efforts to realise the rights of all children in accordance with the Convention on the Rights of the Child, the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women and the South African Constitution.

    On funds:
Donations to UNICEF South Africa help to provide long-term support and protection to children in need. UNICEF will use your donation wherever the needs of children are greatest.

    On tax:
Regrettably, UNICEF South Africa is presently unable to provide tax receipts for donations. Our valued donors will be informed immediately should this change.
